From the Fear of “Falling Behind” to the “Ba Dinh Plan”: The Strategic Thinking of a Vietnamese Scientist

Formerly a professor in Hungary and the United States, and a Chief Software Engineer for AT&T and Siemens, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ai Viet left behind a high salary to return to Vietnam, committing himself to the development of science and technology in his homeland.
The Director of the IGNITE Institute served as the representative of the Vietnamese Government in negotiating software copyrights with Microsoft – a historic deal. He is also the author of the “Ba Dinh Plan” for science and technology development.

In a recent conversation with Dân Trí Newspaper, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ai Viet shared his research journey spanning from Eastern Europe to the United States, his reasons for returning to Vietnam, and his deep concerns and proposals aimed at enhancing national scientific and technological capacity.
